WEEK 62 | I Want You to Be Your Light.

March 10-16, 2025

Promise.

LYS Promotional Photoshoot

In 2018, BTS was riding a huge wave of success. Not only were they dominating in their home country of South Korea and in many other Asian countries, but they were making huge strides in the western music market as well. They had won “Top Social Artist” at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards (and went on to win it every year until it was “retired”) and then “Favorite Social Artist” at the 2018 American Music Awards. But while they were winning the hearts of new international fans every day, they were also struggling to regroup after nearly disbanding at the beginning of the year.

Outside, it was business as usual. There were comebacks to produce and promote and a tour to rehearse and prepare for. Inside, the members worked on reconnecting with not only each other, but their passion for being in BTS. They knew it was there, it’s why they hadn’t quit in the first place, but exhaustion and doubt had taken a toll nonetheless.

Jimin, throughout WINGS and then the beginning of the “Love Yourself” era struggled extensively with imposter syndrome. Logically, he knew he had talent but he still didn’t think it was enough. That he was enough. The others praised not only his voice and his dancing, but also his kind caregiver heart—and while Jimin believed that they meant what they said, he had a hard time seeing it in himself.

Determined to find more he could contribute, and needing to do something with all the negativity swirling around in his brain, he turned his hand to songwriting. He’d been observing his Rap Line hyungs writing songs for years, and had helped pen his solo track “Lie”, but he’d never written a song entirely on his own before. So he began working on one, changing lyrics and melodies over and over again until he became frustrated. He knew he wanted to say something, but wasn’t sure how to do it. So, he went to his leader, who also happened to be the group’s most prolific songwriter, for help. What was RM’s advice?

Music is the solution.

In other words, trust the process and just be honest. So Jimin got back to writing, defaulting quite simply to what he does best—encouraging others. Whereas Jin fills up his emotional cup through humor and making others laugh, Jimin does it through comfort and support. We’ve seen it time and time again over the years—Jimin seeking out the members and comforting them when they’re crying or upset. He’s almost always the one who organizes birthday cakes and singing for the other members, and whenever one of them has a solo schedule—be it a show, a video shoot, etc, Jimin will do his damndest to be there for them, even if he has to get on a plane to do it.

His support extends to ARMY as well. The song he was working on, “Promise”, was released on SoundCloud at the end of 2018 and was meant to encourage his fans. Throughout the Pandemic, even though he was having a rough time dealing with everything, Jimin spent a lot of time going LIVE to hang out and craft or cook with ARMY, or even just to brighten our day.

This is what Jimin is to BTS and ARMY: love. More than his astronomical talent, he is the bleeding heart always looking out for how he can help and inspire others. And though sometimes he can’t see the forest through the trees, by putting out so much love into the universe, it inevitably comes back to him, allowing him to love himself a little more each time.

DAY ONE:

2018 MAMA Acceptance Speech

BTS had an emotional time at the 2018 MAMA awards—we’ve talked about it before. It was a watershed moment for the group, because they’d just spent months lovingly reinforcing the bond they’d almost said goodbye to at the beginning of that year. And when their names were called for the “Artist of the Year” daesang, they were clearly emotional as they took to the stage to accept the award.

j-hope began the speech, and became overwhelmed almost immediately. As he began to cry, Jimin, hovering behind him, wrapped his arms around his hyung and tucked his chin onto his shoulder—offering immediate comfort. And when j-hope couldn’t continue, Jimin took the award out of his hands and carried on with the speech himself.

This was only a few weeks before he would release “Promise”, and I think the lyrics he’d worked so hard on must have been at the forefront of his mind while he spoke that night. The song had started out as an outlet for all the sad and dark thoughts he’d had earlier that year, but as time went on and the members of BTS picked themselves back up off the ground and built a stronger foundation around themselves, he noticed those sad feelings were vanishing.

One word in particular kept buzzing around in his brain: ‘promise’. Instead of leaving it all behind at the start of 2018, the members had made a promise to each other, their families and staff, and their fans (although we didn’t know it yet) that they wouldn’t give up. So with that promise in mind, Jimin turned to RM again, who advised him to get the idea down on paper immediately. And to not only write something the fans would want to hear, but something Jimin himself would want to hear as well.

“Promise” Cover Photo

I want you to be your light, baby…

You should be your light
So that you are not hurt anymore
So that you can smile

I want you to be your night, baby…
You could be your night

So that this night can be honest with you
Promise me now
Even if you feel alone many times a day,
don’t throw yourself away

Jimin had clearly taken Namjoon’s words to heart. When “Promise” dropped on SoundCloud on December 31, 2018, it was Jimin’s resolution for ARMY, for BTS, and for himself—from now on, let’s never think about throwing ourselves away, no matter what. Let’s be honest, and be the light that guides the way out of the darkness, and back to a place where we feel safe and secure.

Fun Fact:

Jimin on Variety Shows Pt. 2

Though Jimin can sometimes be a little shy, especially if he’s not with the rest of BTS, he is also extremely charming and fun, with a devilishly sassy side that is a joy to watch when it comes out. He’s truly a chameleon who can adapt his personality to fit the mood of the show, depending upon who he’s with.

For example, though Jimin can often be found making jokes and laughing goofily, he had a unique opportunity to act as comedic “straight man” to Jin’s “buffoon” on “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator”, setting up jokes and acting embarrassed by his hyung’s antics.

And there’s so much more. There’s Jimin singing beautifully on “King of the Masked Singer”, other hilarious appearances with Jin, and gift shopping with j-hope on Japanese TV. Enjoy!

DAY TWO:

2019 MMA Performance

After Jimin made a “Promise” to himself and his fans, he moved into 2019 with a much lighter heart—and it showed. He really was trying to be a light for himself, and it was pouring into his performances.

That year, BTS embarked on a world tour to support the “Love Yourself” series of albums, and Jimin made history night after night with legendary performances alongside his brothers. Some of his most iconic stage looks and fan cams are from this era.

Although Jimin’s image had changed since his early days in BTS, his onstage bravado had not. In fact, Jimin’s stage prowess only grew bigger and bigger. There’s something about him that just draws your eye—the way he moves, how he sings, the sassy twinkle in his eyes…

RM, in an interview, once described Jimin as “an axis around which the stage revolves”. Simply put—Park Jimin was born to be on stage. You cannot help but watch him when he performs. If you need no other example, look at his solo contemporary dance during BTS’ staggeringly long performance slot at the 2019 MMAs. (Seriously, it’s over 40 minutes long… it might as well have been a Bangtan concert.)

As you watch him leap and spin with flawless grace, looking ethereal in all white, it’s impossible to believe he’s the same Park Jimin who used to wear muscle shirts and backwards caps and flash his abs at the camera every two seconds.

But he is. And let’s be honest, he’d still flash his abs if ARMY asked nicely enough.

Bangtan Bubble: If you could make a promise to Jimin, what would it be?

DAY THREE:

“Filter” Performance

As we continue down the road of Park Jimin’s unbelievable transformation, let’s move on to 2020, shall we? At the beginning of the year, BTS released Map of the Soul: 7, and announced another world tour to accompany it. They firmly believed it was going to be their biggest album and tour ever, and based on the response to their early comeback promotions and ticket sales for the tour, they weren’t wrong.

But then the world came to a screeching halt with the COVID-19 Pandemic, and BTS had to cut their schedule short, and then cancel the tour, which devastated them. Despite knowing it was necessary and for the best, they hated to disappoint ARMY. So, they began to plot almost immediately how they could make it up to us without anyone having to leave their homes.

In the intro I mentioned how often Jimin (and the other members) went LIVE during the Pandemic to keep us company. They cooked, they did crafts, or just hung out and talked to ARMY, trying to keep us all connected during a time when everyone was mostly feeling isolated and depressed.

“Filter” Performance

The members of BTS were no exception. They felt the separation from their fans keenly. Jimin worried endlessly about letting ARMY down. So when the idea came up for them to modify the “Map of the Soul” tour into an online concert, he and the others jumped at the chance to make it as creative and unique as possible, so it would be a worthwhile experience for all of the fans who had hoped to be seeing them in person that year.

And memorable it certainly was. Jimin’s solo on Map of the Soul: 7 is “Filter”, a song that he wrote to talk not only about society’s obsession with images on social media, but also to show off the many new facets of himself he was starting to explore. In his performance to the song during the MOTS ON:E online concert, he strutted around the stage, dressing up in and taking off again different costumes, while singing about how he could be anything we would want him to be—all we have to do is pick the right filter.

And the best part is, no matter which Jimin you pick, he’s going to be devastating.

Fun Fact

Can we ever get enough of 3J? I think not…

Even though BTS doesn’t make a big deal about member “positions” in their group any longer, they did debut with an “official” dance line. Originally it was j-hope, Jimin, and Jung Kook—the strongest dancers in the group. (V was added to the dance line in 2018 after his solo performance of “Singularity”, but for now we’re just going to be talking about the original three.)

They dubbed themselves “3J” and they were the members you were most likely to see front and center during heavy choreography moments, ensuring the audience’s attention was mostly focused on them. There have been a few 3J unit performances and special choreographies over the years, so we’ve collected them all—including practices and Bangtan Bombs—here for you here to enjoy.

DAY FOUR:

"BLACK SWAN" JIMIN SOLO | ON:E

One of the major release tracks from Map of the Soul: 7 is “Black Swan” (incidentally one of my all-time favorite BTS songs), which features a gorgeous orchestral melody set down on top of a mesmerizing trap beat. As usual, BTS delivers a phenomenal mix of compelling rap and beautiful vocals throughout the song, but this time they also ALL delivered a beautiful contemporary choreography to go along with it.

BFFs Jimin & V

Jimin, with his background in contemporary dance, was a natural pick to perform a solo section during the song, and when I watch it—again, I hear RM’s voice in my head repeating how Jimin is an axis. He is such a compelling performer that the stage itself is forced to revolve around him. Indeed you can tell whenever the group performed the song live, the other members were inspired to work even harder, trying to match Jimin’s energy and elegance in interpreting the choreography.

But as much as Jimin has changed over the years, becoming less brash and more ethereal, there are some things about him that are never going to change at all. No matter how sexy or graceful his dancing is, no matter how angelic his vocals sound—he’ll still always be Jimin. And at the end of the day, Park Jimin is a sentimental goofball who loves to play around and shows affection easily.

This is more than evident in the unit song he co-wrote and co-produced for the album—a duet with his soulmate (self-proclaimed by them both), V. The track, “Friends”, chronicles the ups and downs of their friendship, which has been one for the history books ever since BTS began. On paper their personalities seem like they should clash, but they don’t. Their friendship just works, even when they’re fighting about something as stupid as when to eat some dumplings. I dare you to not be endeared when they compare pinky sizes and talk about how they want to be friends forever, no matter what. Jimin and Taehyung are friendship goals forever, even when they betray each other (okay, when Taehyung betrays Jimin and Jimin believes him) on “RUN BTS!”.

Fun Fact:

SUGA and Jimin listening to music and being swaggy all around South Korea?

Yes, please!

We covered this ad campaign during SUGA’s solo month, but it’s worth revisiting for Jimin. “Feel the Rhythm of Korea” aired in 2021, becoming wildly popular for how effortlessly cool it was.

It is still widely mined for meme and fan content to this day.

DAY FIVE:

There is a line in the song “Butter”, which was released in 2021, that is infamous in Bangtan culture. In the M/V, RM is delivering his rap verse, and as he does so, he walks onto a set where the six other members are spelling out “ARMY” with their bodies. Namjoon points to them and says:

Got ARMY right behind us when we say so…

“Butter” Promotional Photoshoot

The meaning? BTS knows they can succeed in anything because they have us, their fans… their ARMY right there to support them, every step of the way. And as their fame grew astronomically during the Pandemic with the release of “Butter” and the other two songs in their English Trilogy (“Dynamite” and “Permission to Dance”) they began to formulate ideas for their future that were risky. But knowing ARMY would always have their backs made it easier for them all to take calculated risks while planning the next phases of their career.

In 2022, Jimin was contacted by Ha Sung-woon, a fellow K-Pop Idol formerly from the groups Wanna One and HOTSHOT, but who had become a soloist in 2019. Sung-woon had been offered a song for an OST (original soundtrack) from the Korean drama “Our Blues”, and it was a duet. He had someone else in mind first (Punch, a female Korean soloist) but then the production company suggested another male voice might give the track more depth and wondered if they could get Jimin to do it.

Since other members of BTS had already recorded OSTs, Sung-woon called Jimin, asking if he’d ever thought about getting in OST recording, but Jimin told him that he’d never had any interest in them before. However, he very cheekily (it was Jimin after all) added that if the OST was with Sung-woon himself, then he could be convinced to do it properly.

“With You” released in April of 2022 and by the end of the year was making all sorts of “Best Of” lists, including ranking on Billboard’s “25 Best K-Pop Songs of 2022”. The list described the song as a “gorgeous, acoustic-led ballad…able to perfectly narrate the bittersweet romantic drama” and “a display of full-fledged musical synergy “ between both singers.

I wanna be with you

And I wanna stay with you

Just like the stars shining bright

You're glowing once more

Right here beside you, I'm still

Walking wherever you go

You will live forever in me

Breathing deeply, within me

It was Jimin’s first time making music with someone outside of BTS, and he was nervous at first to do it, but remembering his promise to “be a light” and knowing ARMY was right behind him, he decided to take a chance.

Bangtan Bubble: What do you find most compelling about Jimin as a performer?

FINAL THOUGHTS:

When I see Jimin from his early days in BTS, I always smile, but also find myself wanting to take care of him. There was an overwhelming eagerness in his eyes back then that seemed to always say “Please love me.” As the years passed and Jimin grew more comfortably into his skin, the look in his eyes seemed to change as well. Instead of “Please love me”, it became “Let me love you.” Suddenly, Jimin was the one looking after us.

When we return in two weeks, we’ll pick up with Jimin as he creates and then releases his first solo album, “Face”, and up to the time of his military enlistment. See you then!

Side Quest

Cutie. Sexy. Lovely. 2018-2022.

Listen friends, the only thing I have to offer you in this Side Quest is danger. Pain and suffering in the form of Park Jimin’s extreme eye contact, lip biting, and devious giggling.

Here we’ve collected all of Jimin’s VLOGs and LIVEs from 2018 to 2022. From hearing about ARMYs boyfriends who are jealous of him, to crafting during the pandemic, to the infamous Maknae Line brand name LIVE debacle of 2022… there’s so much to unpack here. Proceed at your own risk. Everything is as advertised: “cutie, sexy, and lovely”.
